About Gateway of India
The Gateway of India, is the most popular monument of Mumbai. Located on the waterfront, it is the starting point for most of the tourists who explore the city. The Gateway is the first thing that the visitors would see, who come to Mumbai by boats. The magnificent monument was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay. The Governer of Bombay laid the foundation stone on March 31,1911. The monument has historic significance as the last British troops, that sail for England, left through the Gateway. Today, the Gateway of India stands as a finest example of colonial architectural heritage in India. Behind the Gateway, the steps lead down to the sea, from there one can go for a short cruise through Mumbai's spectacular natural harbour.
Architecture of Gateway of India
The 26 metres high archway is made of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete. Built in the Indo-Saracenic style, the architectural elements are derived the 16th century Muslims arhchitectural styles of Gujarat. The central dome is 15 metres is diameter, while the highest point is 26 metre above from the ground. The monument has four turets, decorated with delicate lattice work carved into the yellow basalt stone.Constrcution of Gateway of India
The monument was designed by George Wittet and the foundations were completed in 1920. The Gatweay of India was opened in 1924 by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading. The cost of construction was Rs. 21 lakhs, borne by the Government of India. The approach road was never constrcuted due to lake of funds, so the Gateway stands at an angle to the road leading up to it.Attractions near Gateway of India
Statues of Shivaji and Vivekananda The monument has the statues of Indian Philosopher Swami Vivekananda and the Maratha leader Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.Boat Trips The seaport located on the back side of the gateway, offer the boat riding. The tourist can enjoy the boat trips by paying a reasonable charge.
Taj Mahal Hotel
The five star hotel is situated near the Gateway of India. Built by Jamshedji Tata, this is one of the most famous hotels of India.Elephanta Island The Island located just 10 Kms from Gateway of India, contains a fine cluster of 6th-8th century rock cut caves. The caves have beatifully executed sculptures, the most interesting is the five metre high Mahesmurthy or Trimurthi. It represents three aspects of Shiva, such as the creator, the preserver and the destroyer.
How To Reach
Air:The International Airport is located at a distance of 28 Kms from the city centre. Domestic and International flights are available to Mumbai.Rail: Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus are the major railhed near the Gatweay of India.
Road:Mumbai is connected to rest of the country with good network of roads. The buuses are availbale from all parts of the city as well as neighbouring states.
