About Manali

Manali situated in the central part of Himachal Pradesh, is an important hill station of northern India. The picturesque hill station with snow-capped mountains in its backdrop, green pine tress, vast stretch of green lawns and fragrant fruit orchards is a favourite destination for nature lovers. The perfect hill station sprawling along the banks of the river Beas, attracts thousands of tourists every year. Manali has derived its name from Manavalaya which means the abode of Manu. The temples of the hill station are treated as pilgrimage sites. Manali enjoys a varied climate, the temperature can drop below freezing point in winters, while Summer temperatures are mild. The hill offer the rock climbing option also, the Western Himalayas mountaineering institute in Manali offers rock-climbing courses. One can also try river rafting on Beas river. Tourists can enjoy skiing on the slopes of mountain, facilities for skiing are available at Solang Nullah (January-March) and Rohtang La (during summer).

Major Attractions

Arjun Gufa : Arjun Gufa (Cave) is located just 5 Kms from Manali, on the left bank of the river Beas. It is said that Arjuna practiced austerities here to get Pushupata Ashtra or weapon from Lord Indra.

Hadimba Temple : Hadimba or Dhungiri temple, built in 1553, is one of the most important temples in the region. The four story wodden temple is situated in the middle of a forest known as Dhungir Van Vihar. Dedicated to Hidimba Devi, this temple is popular for its exquisitely carved doorway.

Jagatshuk : One of the biggest villages in Kullu district, Jagatshuk is located about 6 Kms away from Manali. Jagatshuk is popular for its Shiva Temple built in 'Shikara' style. It also houses temples of Lord Shiva and Sandhya Gayatri.

Kothi : Kothi is situated 12 Kms away from Manali, at the foot of the Rohtang pass. The quiet beautiful spot offers the spectacular view of the snow-capped peaks and glaciers.

Manu Temple Manali Manu Temple : The temple is dedicated to sage Manu, the creator of human race on the earth. It is believed to be the only temple of Manu in India. It is also believed that Manu meditated here.

Vashist Springs and Temple : The small village just 3 Kms from Manali is located at an altitude of 1,982 metres. Sprawling across the Beas river, Vashist has natural sulphur springs. The hot water springs emerging out of the mountains has medicinal value. Modern bathhouses, with Turkish-style showers have been built for the convenience of tourists. Vashist houses the pyramidal stone temple dedicated to sage Vashisth and a Lord Rama temple.

Monasteries : Manali is famous for its shiny Gompas or Buddhist monasteries.

Rahala waterfalls : The beautiful waterfalls are located at a distance of 16 Kms from Manali.

The 2,501 metre high waterfalls lies at the start of the climb to the Rohtang Pass.

Rohtang Pass : The 3979 metre high Rohtang Pass is the highest point on the Manali-Keylong road.

The place provides the breathtaking views of the mountain rising far above clouds.

Solang Vally with snow Solang Valley : Situated at a distance of 14 Kms from Manali, Solang valley offers the magnificent view of the glaciers and snow-capped mountains. Solang valley has fine ski slopes, the Mountaineering Institute has installed a ski lift for training purpose.

How to reach there

By Air : Bhuntar airport at a distance of 52 km from Manali is the nearest airport. There are flights to Bhuntar from Delhi via Shimla.

By Rail : Nearest railhead is Jogindernagar (135 Kms) which has the narrow-gauge line. The closest broad gauge railheads are Chandigarh (310 Kms) and Ambala (355 Kms).

By Road : Manali is well connected by good network of roads with towns and cities like Kullu, Shimla, Dalhousie, Ambala, Mandi, Chandigarh and Delhi.
