Bodhgaya - A Buddhist Pilgrimage Centre
Bodhgaya, situated 12 Kms south of Gaya, is one of the most visited Buddhist pilgrimage centres in India. The town sprawling on the western banks of the Falgu river, has its associations with Buddhism, since time immemorial. Buddhists from all over the world come to visit this sacred place to have a glimpse of the century-old miracles. Bodhgaya is the very place where Buddha attained enlightenment, siting under the sacred Bodhi tree (Asvatta tree). There are four sacred pilgrimage centres of Bhuddhist in India, which are related to the life of Buddha. First most sacred place is Lumbinivana (the birth place of Buddha), second sacred pilgrimage centre is Bodhgaya, third is Sarnath, the site of Buddha’s first lecture, and fourth is Kushinara in Uttar Pradesh, where he left his body.

Mahabodhi Temple
Mahabodhi Temple Mahabodhi temple is situated at the place where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. It is said that Emperor Ashok, built this temple when he visited Bodhgaya 250 years, after Buddha’s enlightenment. The temple has a 170 feet (50 metre) high tower, with a glided image of Lord Buddha. The present temple was restored by Sir Alexander Cunningham, in 1883. A beautiful stone railing encircles the temple, while the walls of the temple are carved with the scenes from Buddha’s life. Some of the portions of south and west railings are very old, and some parts of the railing are reproductions. A huge image of Buddha stands in the inner sanctuary. In the center of the temple there is a Siva-linga. Mahabodhi temple is also sacred to the Hindus, because Lord Buddha is the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

Buddha Jayanti Festival
The Buddha Jayanti festival is celebrated every year in May. The festival celebrates the appearance day of Buddha, the day when he got enlightenment and the day he left his body.
